Staffing and Budget

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is a world-class law enforcement organization committed to safeguarding lives by protecting the public from violent crime. ATF protects the public from crimes involving firearms, explosives, arson, and the diversion of tobacco products; regulates lawful commerce in firearms and explosives; and provides worldwide support to law enforcement, public safety, and industry partners.

In fiscal year (FY) 2023, ATF had 5,281 employees, including 2,597 special agents and 862 industry operations investigators. Its FY 2023 enacted budget was approximately $1.6 billion.
