Two Men Indicted in Federal Court in Connection with the Robbery and Murder of a Man in Chicago
CHICAGO — Two men have been indicted in federal court in connection with the robbery and murder of a man in Chicago last year.
Jaylan Williams and Brandon Cunningham conspired to rob Anthony Oliver in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood on Sept. 13, 2022, according to a superseding indictment returned Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago. During the robbery, Williams and Cunningham murdered Oliver, the indictment states.
The superseding indictment charges Williams, 23, and Cunningham, 21, both of Chicago, with robbery conspiracy, robbery and firearm counts. Williams and Cunningham have been ordered detained in law enforcement custody pending trial.
The superseding indictment was announced by Morris Pasqual, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and Larry Snelling, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elly M. Peirson.
The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The charges against Williams and Cunningham carry a maximum penalty of death. If convicted, the Court must impose reasonable sentences under federal statutes and the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
