Niobrara Man Sentenced to 15 Months for Possession of a Firearm
Acting United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Daniel John Denny, 63, of Niobrara, Nebraska, was sentenced on November 9, 2022 by United States District Court Judge John M. Gerrard to 15 months’ imprisonment following his conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Denny pleaded guilty to the offense on August 2, 2022. After he completes his prison sentence, Denny will also serve two years on supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
Denny was previously convicted of second-degree murder in the District Court of Knox County, Nebraska, on June 20, 1977. On the evening of July 8, 2021, the defendant was contacted by the Santee Sioux Tribal Police. Residents in the area had called police when they saw a suspicious person walking on their property. The police discovered that Denny had a .22 caliber rifle with him, and he was arrested.
This case was investigated by the Santee Sioux Tribal Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
