Man Sentenced for Illegal Possession of a Firearm After Felony Conviction
NEW ORLEANS — Carlsel Alexander, 27, of Baton Rouge, was sentenced on Nov. 30, by U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1), announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
The indictment alleged that Alexander was a convicted felon in possession of a FN Model 509, 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun.
Alexander was sentenced to 33 months' imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities and measuring the results.
The case was investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Bell of the General Crimes Unit.
