Bristol, Virginia Man Sentenced to More Than 24 Years in Methamphetamine Conspiracy

ABINGDON, Va. – A Bristol, Virginia man, who conspired with several others to import and distribute methamphetamine, was sentenced today to more than 24 years in federal prison.

Joseph Carroll, 44, pleaded guilty in August 2021 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, one count of conspiracy to commit international money laundering, one count of possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. He was sentenced today to 295 months in federal prison.

According to court documents, Carroll and others wired thousands of dollars to contacts with a Mexican cartel for the purpose of coordinating shipments of crystal methamphetamine.  Carroll and his co-conspirators imported and distributed in excess of 45 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine..

U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh of the Western District of Virginia and Charlie J. Patterson, Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s Washington Field Division made the announcement.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Bristol, Virginia Police Department investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. Murphy prosecuted the case.
